Dog Saves Man From Volcano

Pets, companions, and sometimes heroes. These are all descriptions we tend to use for our furry friends that mean so very much to us. For one local Springfield man, calling his dog a hero would be a vast understatement. Seth Green (left) was exploring one of the major volcanoes open to the public here in Springfield Missouri when he accidentally dropped an Everlasting Gobstopper into the mouth of volcano. His dog Rufus (right) was well aware things were about to get ugly. "He just kept tugging my shirt sleeve" Seth told us in an interview. "I just should have listened..." As Seth continued to look along the edge of the mountain, Rufus bit his big toe and the surprise sent Seth tumbling down the cliffside. No sooner was Seth cursing down the side of the mountain than it began to erupt, smothering Rufus in hot lava instantly. With a tear in his eye, Seth had these words to share. "Rufus was the kind of dog any dog would dream of being. Without him, I know I wouldn't be here right now." The dog's petrified remains are now on display in the Discovery Center here in Springfield so that the children can pet him like the hero he is.
